The reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and emergency treatment of all patients
presenting to the Accident and Emergency Department. Initial treatment carried
out on patients requiring admission or follow-up in the hospital should be in
accordance with the policies and protocols agreed in consultation between the
Accident and Emergency Department and the Consultants in the appropriate
speciality
Patients referred to specialist units within the hospital are the responsibility of
that specialist unit, who will see the patient in the Accident and Emergency
Department and arrange the appropriate care. However, the medical staff of the
Accident and Emergency Department are responsible for any emergency care
necessary until the arrival of a member of the specialist unit. A medical
assessment unit under the care of physicians is available for direct GP referrals.
b The appropriate discharge of patients to either a specialist department within the
hospital, another hospital in the area, a patient’s GP, or back to the community. It
is important that the number of return attendance’s to the Accident and Emergency
Department is minimised and that the majority of patients are appropriately placed
at their initial Accident and Emergency consultation.
c The direct clinical supervision and training of junior medical staff working in the
Accident and Emergency Department, as well as the organisation and delegation
of clinical work. Guidelines should be prepared and maintained, for the
emergency treatment of patients.
d The Major Incident procedure at Worthing as relevant to Accident and Emergency;
and will ensure that the department is ready to implement the procedure at any
time, through holding periodic practices. Contributes to the periodic reviews and
verification of these plans.
The appointee will also be involved with and take part in:
1 The regular review and availability of all equipment, both major and minor, in the
Accident and Emergency Department.
2 The promotion of the Accident and Emergency Department by effective
communication and regular liaison with:
– Specialist medical and service departments within the hospital.
– General practitioners, both with regard to individual patient care and more
generally.
– The Ambulance, Police and other emergency services.
– The Social Services Department.
– Those with expertise in the identification of children at risk or sexual
and/or physical abuse.
The Clinical Lead must ensure that all junior medical staff in the Accident
and Emergency Department are fully trained in this respect.
3 Monitoring, in the broadest sense, the quality of service given by the Accident and
Emergency Department; including clinical audit.
4 See the number of patients as suggested by the College of Emergency Medicine, as well as leading the introduction of the new Care
Quality indicators alongside the other Consultants within the team.
